As many of you already know, I’m in the process of becoming a chiropractic neurologist. You may be thinking, “What does that mean for me?” Well, the answer is quite simple . . . Chiropractic neurology is considered that branch of Chiropractic that deals with the definitive diagnosis, and subsequent management of conditions afflicting the human nervous system. It has evolved because of a need in the health care delivery systems for neurological specialists who appreciate the integral relationship between the spinal and peripheral body articulations, and their profound influence on proper somatic and visceral neurological functions. In layman’s terms – it’s a specific way to determine HOW your nervous is functioning and the best way to correct any problems.
What you may NOT know is the WHY behind this. Having come from a large extended family (my mother has 14 siblings), I found out that a few of my cousin’s were diagnosed with Autism. As a chiropractic student at the time, I always wondered, “Is there anything that I can do to help them?” I had heard that chiropractic COULD help, but didn’t know WHY it would. So I searched (for my benefit) to figure out the why. In March 2010, I went to a seminar in which a gentleman by the name of Dr. Fred Clary was speaking. He was discussing how important NEUROLOGY was in treating people with various conditions: ADD/ADHD, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, Stroke rehabilitation, etc . . . I was fortunate enough to witness a woman who had suffered a stroke two years prior to the seminar and was bound to a wheelchair – and after about 5 – 10 minutes of working with her, the woman was able to move her arm. And this was after TWO YEARS of PHYSICAL THERAPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was amazing. It was from that moment that I decided, I HAVE to know what this guy KNOWS.
As of this past weekend, we have completed 2/3 of the course, and I learn more and more each month. Since April is Autism Awareness month (and it’s the reason that led me to this course), I felt it was only appropriate to have this be the “Condition of the Month” in the office. As with every month, there will be information on the topic as well as how chiropractic can HELP. Notice I say HELP and not CURE. . . by correcting problems withing the nervous system, the body is able to do its job and heal itself. The way I like to think about it – if you get a cut on your finger, and you put a band-aid on it and it heals, did the band-aid do the healing? Heck no, it just protected the OPEN wound from getting junk/germs into your body. Your body is the one that delivered certain vitamins and cells to the cut to heal it – when your nervous system is working correctly. I know this is a long story, but all in all, AMAZING things are happening in the office – and I have not only my teacher/mentor Dr. Clary to thank for it, but my cousin’s for sparking that, “need to know,” bug in me and getting me to his seminar.
I will do my best to keep you posted on some of the most amazing things I’m seeing here as well as how chiropractic is helping people get better – NATURALLY!
